I AGREE with James Stevenson (Letters, May 26) regarding the threat to rugby in Scotland due to the actions of a faction within Scottish Rugby who want to subsume the Scotland Sevens team into a GB squad.

Scottish rugby players were described as not being as good individually as others within the Six Nations and that their performances were due to team effort not skill. Who said this? Andy Farrell, who is one of the Lions coaches and a member of the Irish coaching team. This is underlined by the fact that Scots were overlooked for both the Lions squad and the GB Olympic Sevens squad.

The implications as so obvious everyone can predict the future. This will reduce the opportunities for young players even further given that we already have only two professional teams, which is less than any other of our new "partners". Rugby will lose fans massively as part of the joy of the game is competing against the other home nations. Most true rugby fans would rather see Ireland added rather than the rest reduced. If we are honest who cares about the Olympic Sevens once every four years?

Those in positions within Scottish rugby who are promoting and negotiating this absurd idea should resign immediately as their duty is to act in the best interests of Scottish rugby and not the Olympics and/or English rugby. If they don't understand the anger that exists the hint is in the name of the organisation, namely, the Scottish Rugby Union.
