IT would appear that playing the part of Winston Churchill in his latest film leads Brian Cox to think that he knows what Churchill, long dead, would have thought of certain personalities of today, including President Trump and Boris Johnson (“Cox says Churchill would not have liked ‘idiot’ Trump”, The Herald, June 13). He compares Boris Johnson to Churchill, saying that Churchill was a man of principle and that Mr Johnson is an opportunist. We should remember that Churchill (heroic figure as he was) started as a Conservative, then became a Liberal for 20 years before returning to the Conservatives. Moreover, the book about Churchill written by Mr Johnson, “deep as a blackhead” according to Cox, was well received by a number of critics and widely read.

Cox talks about the “insidious” caste system in British society. Part of that system is, I believe, the honours system in this country. It is interesting to note that he became part of that system by accepting the CBE.
