NO doubt the announcement of the salaries of top TV and radio presenters has raised some surprise, if not a little envy, among the consuming public. And these salaries are frequently in multiples of the earnings of the Prime Minister. However, I wonder if the great British public are aware that very many partners in large professional accounting and legal firms seem to earn salaries at least equal to the “stars” at the BBC.

I recently read that the partners of one London legal firm earned more than £1 million each, and similarly, information in the business and financial press has reported earnings of “big four” accountancy firm partners at £700,000 each. Now it may be argued that these numbers are irrelevant as they relate to private business, unlike the BBC expenditure which mostly comes from the licence fee which we all have to pay. However, much of the income of large legal and accounting firms is derived from work either directly or indirectly arising from Government initiatives or legislation and therefore the income of many partners is the result of the state’s largesse with our taxes.

It amazes me that no-one seems to be concerned about these extortionate incomes.

THE BBC has had the tag of left-wing bias attached to it for many years which it has always denied. It now has been forced to reveal it pays right-wing wages. Does this mean the BBC finally has to admit to having a "red" face after all for apparently questionable spending of licence fee payer's money?
