IT is good news for communities the length and breadth of Scotland that the organisers of the Urban Realm magazine that has awarded the ill-conceived and distasteful Plook on the Plinth to various towns over 17 years feels that it is no longer appropriate to single out struggling communities (“Carbuncle awards scrapped after 17 years singling out ugly towns”, The Herald, August 8 ).

Was it ever appropriate?

Perhaps there is a case for the magazine deploying its imagination and talents to more constructive ends.

The leafy suburbs are not for all.
