ONE should heed alarm bells ringing in one's head before signing up with double glazing salesman on one's doorstep. The lure of a special discount for an immediate signature is hard to resist.

Reassured by the seven-day cancellation clause and refundable deposit, one failed to spot the £149 "administration fee" tucked away in the small print that the salesman omitted to mention.

On phoning to cancel the following morning one was assured that no money would be taken out of one's account. A fortnight later one was poorer by £149. Another mug...

The once-reputable Scottish firm I was dealing with has recently been taken over by an American company.
