WHEN you think of the situation in America regarding the police wearing guns, it seems to be only making the situation worse (but perhaps no one should be surprises as the criminal fraternity all carry guns). In our country our own police and public opinion have always been against them carrying guns. But, because of the softly-softly approach by our justice system – soft sentences and a significant under-recording of violence against our police officers – they feel they are not getting the support they deserve, and that only way they can protect themselves against the criminal fraternity is by carrying guns ("Two-thirds of police want easier access to handguns", The Herald, November 22). Who can blame them? I feel public opinion will now support them.
