THE Herald Magazine (March 3) had an entertaining feature on inspiring Scottish women. I felt there were some omisions such as the leaders of the rent strikes, Mairi Mhor nan Orainn, or Mary MacPherson, and others.

The one I would most like to have seen is Jane Haining (Memorial stained glass in Govanhill, Queen’s Park Parish Church). She had a position in the Church of Scotland orphanage in Budapest where a number of the orphans were Jewish girls. When the Nazis invaded she stayed with her girls, stating they had been abandoned before; she would not abandon them again.

She was murdered by the Nazis in Auschwitz, still loyal to her charges. She is, I believe, the only non-Jewish Scotswoman named on the Holocaust Memorial in Israel and she should receive more honour in the land of her birth.
