Parsons Peebles Generation has won a £1.5m order from Babcock Marine at Rosyth, linked to Babcock's major aircraft carrier contract.

The Rosyth-based company, based in Edinburgh until its factory at East Pilton was destroyed by fire, was bought out of receivership three years ago by Paterson's Quarries.

It said that along with £2.2m of orders for two major US energy groups, the contract would provide stability for the 40-strong workforce. The company produces bespoke motors and generators and has exported around the world since its formation in 1898. It continues to service and maintain its products around the world.

The company predicts a turnover for the year to end November of around £10m and says the new orders will have a significant impact on next year's income.

William Paterson, managing director, said: "We have invested heavily in the company in terms of equipment and IT infrastructure which has seen the business return to a healthy position by offering bespoke products to the global market."

Peter Hughes, chief executive of Scottish Engineering, said the "significant" orders were "an excellent example of first-class Scottish engineering companies winning work against stiff international competition".

The aircraft carrier contract is worth £35m and will protect 5000 jobs.
