Politicians are persistently fearful of sport as an election issue

Kevin Ferrie on Thursday: For some years, I had a pet theory that most politicians tended to neglect sport because their own inadequacies in that area had led them into the debating chambers and libraries at an early age.

Those who say sport and politics should not mix are usually politicians. That is largely, I believe, because it is an area that matters hugely to the wider world and is full of highly-motivated, competitive people with whom politicians struggle to deal.
