David Cameron has hailed his party's new role as the official opposition in Scotland.

The Scottish Conservatives beat Labour to come second in the Holyrood elections.

The Prime Minister said that Ruth Davidson would be a "leader who will stand up to the SNP and give Scotland strong opposition".

The Scottish Tories won 31 MSPs, the party's best result since the formation of the Scottish Parliament and up from 15 in 2011.

The SNP won 63 of the 129 seats, failing just short of a second overall majority.

Labour took 24 seats, down 13 from five years ago.
