TWO MPs suspended by the SNP over police and Crown inquiries into financial issues are expected to be blocked from standing for re-election under the party banner today.

Natalie McGarry in Glasgow East and Michelle Thomson in Edinburgh West will learn their fate after a meeting of the SNP’s ruling national executive committee (NEC) around noon.

The NEC is expected to confirm the selection of new candidates in the pair’s seats, plus selections in the three constituencies held by Labour, the LibDems and Tories.

All 54 sitting SNP MPs are understood to be standing again on June 8.

Former MSP Jim Eadie is tipped to apply for Labour-held Edinburgh South, where Doug Thomson, husband of Holyrood magazine editor Mandy Rhodes, is also in contention.

Malcolm Fleming, a former special adviser to Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon, is hoping to stand against Tory David Mundell in the Borders.

The SNP will also try to unseat LibDem Alistair Carmichael in Orkney and Shetland.

Scottish Labour’s ruling executive committee also meets today to begin selecting candidates, the first time the process has been run entirely from Scotland.

Leader Kezia Dugdale said it was “unlikely” any MPs defeated in 2015 would stand.
