It was a historic day for both parties.

Following months of negotiations, on 15 October 2012 Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond welcomed Prime Minister David Cameron to St Andrew's House in Edinburgh, where they signed the deal that granted Holyrood the power to hold a referendum on independence.

The deal, dubbed the Edinburgh Agreement, was also signed by Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Scottish Secretary Michael Moore.

The agreement laid the parameters for how the two governments would work together to ensure the referendum could take place, and confirmed that only question would appear on the ballot paper.

It also gave power to the Scottish Parliament to pass the legislation that would determine the timing, franchise and wording of the referendum question.
