ALEX Salmond phoned Rupert Murdoch yesterday following the media mogul's apparent support for independence on Twitter.

Mr Murdoch, head of News Corporation, wrote on the social networking site on Monday: "Let Scotland go and compete. Everyone would win."

Mr Salmond, who discussed Mr Murdoch's newspaper plans during the conversation, but not their editorial stances, said: "It was an interesting eight words: a textbook example of how to deploy a tweet and cause a great stir.
