£89.4m claimed for MPs' expenses

MPs' costs soared by nearly one-quarter last year to almost the level they were before the 2009 expenses scandal.

Politicians used the money to pay for staff, travel, accommodation away from home – and to buy 50 iPads, figures show.

Three Scottish MPs, LibDem Alistair Carmichael and Labour MPs Brian Donohoe and Willie Bain, were among the five highest claimants.
