Defence Secretary speaks out on Trident

Conservative Defence Secretary Phillip Hammond has attacked the Liberal Democrats over Trident as the parties battle it out for the future of the nuclear deterrent on the Clyde.

The Tory cabinet minister told his party's annual conference in Birmingham that the LibDems wanted a "cheap fix" for the aging system.

While both parties agree the need for a new deterrent, the LibDems oppose the Conservatives' preferred option of a like-for-like replacement.
