Falklands vote count begins

Counting will begin today in a referendum over whether the Falkland Islands should remain British.

Islanders started voting yesterday in the poll that is being staged in response to increasing demands from Argentina, which calls the territory Las Malvinas, for sovereignty negotiations.

The tiny community is expected to vote in favour of retaining its status as an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom and the results were due to be announced in the early hours of today.

Outside observers have been monitoring the vote in order to prove it is free and fair
