SCOTLAND'S place in the world will be discussed during this year's three-day Festival of Politics at Holyrood.

Talks on small countries and their influence and standing will be held alongside debates on the constitutional future of the nation.

Tricia Marwick, presiding officer of the Scottish Parliament, said: "This is one of the most interesting times in our history, a time when questions about who we are as a nation and what the future holds make daily headlines.

"This year's Festival of Politics will explore many of these questions through lively debate and discussion in the unique setting of the parliament building.

"The Festival of Politics is where politics and people come together."

Beginning on Friday August 23, events include a look at "cultural diplomacy" in overcoming conflict, the future of Europe and small nations, issues linked to the independence debate, and an American perspective on Britain an Europe.
