ONE OF the big winners in the Budget process, the justice system will receive a hike of 6% in its money next year, allowing the Government to maintain its commitment to retain the 1000 extra police officers recruited during the SNP's first term in office.

Ministers say this will allow them to keep recorded crime at a 35-year low, re-offending at its lowest for a decade and the continued use of the proceeds of crime seizures to help local communities.

Over the next three years, the rise will allow moves towards a single police force and fire service, while maintaining provision at local level and good lines of accountability. The planned capital programme has also been secured, so the improvements in the Court of Session will go ahead, as will the new Scottish Crime Campus at Gartcosh and a new prison in Grampian. Other priorities will be tackling knife crime, drugs, alcohol and sectarianism, and continued reform and streamlining of the courts and tribunals system.“We have invested in breaking the cycle of offending and imprisonment, and in tough community-based sentences. I want us to build on the progress,” said the Justice Secretary.
