Scottish Labour hopes to hold a St Andrew's Day debate on Scottish independence at Westminster.
The move follows the tradition set by Welsh MPs who currently hold a St David's Day debate every year.
A Labour source said that the event would be an "obvious focal point to discuss some of the big issues around independence".
