Just 48 hours before the former backbencher was sentenced at London’s Old Bailey to 16 months’ imprisonment for fiddling his parliamentary expenses, the House of Commons Members Estimate Committee (MEC), chaired by John Bercow, the Speaker, agreed, according to its spokeswoman, that the grant “should not be paid to any former member convicted of an offence of dishonesty relating to members’ allowances”.
