Salmond pressure over visit

THE Scottish Government has admitted holding "many meetings" with China over human rights issues, but denies intervening over the visit of the Dalai Lama next weekend.

Ministers have found themselves under fire over a failure to schedule a meeting with Alex Salmond.

Opponents claim the First Minister was ducking a meeting to avoid jeopardising the export trade to China.

Now another row has broken out over the withdrawal of the SNP Lord Provost of Dundee from a speaking engagement.

He claimed the reason was a family bereavement, but others blame recent lobbying by Li Ruiyou, the Chinese Consul General to Scotland, against the Dalai Lama's visit.
