Sir Fred may be stripped of title

SIR Fred Goodwin faced a renewed threat to losing his knighthood last night as confusion broke out over who referred the matter to the committee of civil service chiefs, which is to look at stripping him of the honour.

Whitehall sources claimed the Scottish Government had referred Sir Fred to the Forfeiture Committee but a spokesman for Alex Salmond said: "On coming to office in 2007, SNP Ministers decided to have no role in honours nominations. Therefore, by definition, Scottish Ministers have no involvement in the Forfeiture Committee process."
