Swinney backs vote for EU nationals

FINANCE Secretary John Swinney has defended plans to let EU nationals living in Scotland vote in the independence referendum while hundreds of thousands of Scots living elsewhere in the UK would be excluded.

Speaking after it emerged 60,000 EU nationals living in Scotland would be eligible while 750,000 Scots living south of the Border would not, Mr Swinney said the referendum would be carried out under the same criteria which applied to the devolution vote and last year's Scottish parliamentary election.
