Tax offices closed as workers strike

Tax offices were closed yesterday and calls to telephone inquiry lines were met with a recorded announcement because of a strike by tens of thousands of Revenue and Customs (HMRC) workers.

The Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) took action in protest at "massive" job cuts they claim undermined efforts to clamp down on tax avoidance schemes.

Almost all the staff at the East Kilbride tax office walked out, with only 3% remaining on duty. In Dundee, 91% of staff went on strike and in Aberdeen 83%.
