SNP MSPs cheered their most recent reason to be in favour of Europe when they applauded a new Holyrood colleague taking his oath – first in English with a French twist to his Doric accent, and then in his native tongue.

Dijon-born Christian Allard made a point as he was sworn in as an MSP representing constituents of his adopted country – that he came with no particular qualifications but made a success in a place where he was made to feel welcome.

He replaces SNP backbencher Mark McDonald who resigned from his North East regional seat to contest the Aberdeen Donside constituency by-election in June.

The 49-year-old made a non-religious affirmation in English as is required, and then repeated it in his first language.

He said outwith the chamber: "I've raised three daughters here and I'm proud to call Scotland my home."
