The LibDems said the results would prove it was possible to have a nuclear deterrent without a £20 bil-lion like-for-like replacement. The party faces a fight with its Tory colleagues who oppose a scaled-back version of the ageing system.
But SNP defence spokesman Angus Robertson said Scotland should not be the home of the UK's nuclear weapons, adding: "A Yes vote for Scotland in 2014 is the only way to get rid of Trident from the Clyde."
A decision on Trident's replacement is not expected until after the 2015 General Election.
