SCOTLAND will bid to host the UN's annual climate change summit if there is a Yes vote on Thursday, SNP environment minister Paul Wheelhouse and Greens leader Patrick Harvie have announced.

The annual talks, which bring together world leaders, diplomats, and climate experts to discuss progress tackling climate change, will be held in Lima, Peru, this year.

Mr Wheelhouse and Mr Harvie hope to attract a future summit to Scotland following Glasgow's success hosting of the Commonwealth Games.

The Scottish Government has set an ambitious target to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 42 per cent by 2020, compared with the level in 1990.

However, figures released in June showed the annual target towards the goal had been missed for the third year in a row. The latest figures, covering 2012, showed greenhouse gas emissions rose by 0.8 per cent.

Mr Wheelhouse said: "Scotland has an excellent story to tell on climate change."
