LEADING Scottish fashion designer Christopher Kane has said he wants to keep the UK together after he scooped an award.

Kane, who is originally from Newarthill, North Lanarkshire, made his first comments about the independence campaign after being named British designed at the Elle Style Awards in London on Tuesday night.

Kane, whose latest collection has been on show at London Fashion Week, said: "I think we're great united, stronger united, and that's it."

Of the award, Kane, who is now based in London, said he was a "little bit in shock, I'm very proud" and was proud to have kept his Scottish accent.

He added: "People are always surprised I still have my Scottish accent. I'm very lucky, I have a great background and support."

Kane, 32, is one of Scotland's top fashion designers. He has had a great 12 months, and is on course to open his first store this year in London's upmarket Mayfair.

Last year fashion giant Kering bought more than 50% of his business and he's won plaudits for his latest styles which have attracted the attention of his friend, Anna Wintour at Fashion Week.
