Rupert Murdoch says he is worried about some of the groups campaigning for a Yes vote in the Independence referendum.

The media boss and owner of the Scottish Sun told his followers on Twitter this morning that Alex Salmond's allies were "far left socialists and extreme greenies".

However, he stopped short of declaring his support for either side in the campaign.

And it is yet unclear whether the Scottish Sun will become the second paper after the Sunday Herald to declare its support for a Yes vote.

Murdoch tweeted: "Have to worry about some of Salmond's allies. Far left socialists and extreme greenies. Must change course to prosper if he wins."

He then went on to praise the 18th century Scottish Enlightenment and said he was hopeful of reconciliation amongst Scots following the referendum, whatever the result.

He also said that Britain would be "better managed" if there was a no vote and devo max was put in place.

The media tycoon tweeted: "Should remember Scots invented modern world 200 odd years ago with Scottish Enlightenment. Free people, free markets, decent restraints.

"Foundations continue to lift millions out of poverty. World an Immeasurably better place, living standards continue upwards for billions.

"That process must continue. Despite English patronising, whatever the outcome, extremists on both sides will fade, warm feelings return.

"With all- party promises of max devolution, if kept, Britain will be a different place, certainly better managed. Tough negotiations ahead."
