SIR Chris Hoy has not been invited to join the anti-Scottish independence campaign and there are no plans at present to do so.

Reports had suggested Britain's most successful Olympian, with six gold medals, was to be invited to become a high-profile campaigner for the Better Together campaign.

However, a leading campaign source told The Herald: "We have not approached and not targeted Sir Chris Hoy."

He said it was difficult to say who would be approached over the next two years or so but added: "We would like to have a lot of sports people coming on board. But at present we do not have a definitive list."

Certainly, getting the 36-year-old sporting hero on board would be a coup for Alistair Darling, the "no" campaign leader, and his colleagues.

Sir Chris made clear his pride in being part of Team GB and said: "I'm British. I'm Scottish and British. You can be both; they are not mutually exclusive."

The award-winning cyclist has expressed his desire to represent Scotland in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
