ELECTION officials across the country are today processing thousands of last-minute additions to the voters' register, following last night's deadline to sign up in time to have a say in the independence referendum.

Voters who submitted forms ahead of the midnight cut-off point have been assured their applications will be processed in time, with local registration centres having a deadline of September 11 to finalise the roll.

In Glasgow, people arrived at City Chambers throughout the day to hand in their forms. The council insisted there was no applications backlog, despite members of the public saying they had been told that forms submitted days ago not yet been processed.

Figures obtained by The Herald revealed yesterday that across 25 of the most deprived council wards in Scotland, the number of voters had fallen by more than 5,000 since 2012.

However, there have been almost 40,000 amendments to the electoral register in those areas since March, with some coming off the register and others signing up or applying for postal votes.
