THE Better Together campaign has hailed a poll showing a large majority of voters do not believe the SNP has made a convincing case for independence.

The YouGov survey of 1038 Scottish adults for the pro-independence group found 62% said the SNP's case for independence was either "not very convincing'" or "not convincing at all".

Only 30% of those asked last week were convinced by what they have heard from the SNP so far, with 11% saying the case for independence was "very convincing" and 19% finding it "fairly convincing".

In a question that allowed up to three answers, the main issues raised were: the economy (59%), tax and spending levels (39%), pensions and welfare (36%), health services (30%) and currency (22%).

Better Together leader Alistair Darling said: "The SNP have no answers on basic questions like which currency we would use or who would pay for our pensions.

"Their case is falling apart day by day.'"

A Yes Scotland spokesman said: "The evidence is clear that Scotland would be more prosperous as an independent country, with the means and the will to be a fairer country too.

"We will continue to press the positive and optimistic case for an independent Scotland, which we firmly believe will win the day on September 18 next year."
