ALEX Salmond is leading a trade mission to Beijing and Hong Kong - his fourth official trip to China since he became First Minister in 2007.

The SNP leader will undertake business and government meetings in a meeting that is likely to boost his image as a statesman on the world stage in the run up to next year's independence referendum.

He will head delegations demonstrating Scotland's expertise in the oil & gas and construction sectors. Key representatives from both industries will be present at showcases, business meetings and government talks in Beijing and Hong Kong.

Mr Salmond will also promote a Scottish seafood showcase and events aimed at strengthening education links between Scotland and the world's second largest economy. Describing China as a an "economic powerhouse," the SNP leader added: "It is crucial that Scotland strengthens its position as an attractive place for Chinese investors and an exporter of high quality goods for that market.

"Our warm relationship is built on mutual respect of each other's ancient societies, with deep links already established in areas such as culture and education as well as developing business links and diplomatic relations."

Overall Scottish exports to China rose by 88% from £265 million to £498m in 2012.

Mr Salmond also said there has been an upturn in whisky exports to the Communist country since the national drink gained geographical indicator status.

The delegate includes oil and gas firms such as Adrok Group, Addax Petroleum, Aggreko, Amec and Petrofac. They are joined from the building sector by Construction Scotland and Applegreen Homes. Universities Scotland will also attend.
