THE SNP yesterday reported a surge in membership in the wake of the No vote in the referendum.

The party said almost 5000 new recruits had joined, taking its numbers to 30,500.

Business convenor Derek McKay said: "Seeing our membership spike by nearly 5000 is incredibly encouraging. Some will no doubt be coming from Labour but many will be new to politics."

The Scottish Greens, who backed a Yes vote, reported 1200 new members.
