HISTORIC – that is the word the world's media is using to sum up events in Edinburgh.

Milan's Corriere della Sera said Scots would be asked to say "addio" to the UK but not Buckingham Palace.

CNN referred to a poll taking place 700 years after "William Wallace died for Scottish independence".

The Washington Post said: "The vote on independence for Scotland sets up the possibility that Washington's closest strategic ally could be torn asunder."

Barcelona's La Vanguardia quoted Artur Mas, Catalan leader, saying he will press for a Scottish-style deal.

El Pais, however, claimed the Scottish independence movement was "based more on social values than on identities".
