DONALD Trump, with whom Alex Salmond has shared a fraught relationship, blamed the outcome of the referendum vote on the First Minister's support for renewable energy.

Ministers effectively rescued Mr Trump's Aberdeenshire golf course plan back in 2007 by "calling in" the application after it was turned down by local councillors. But Mr Trump mounted a legal challenge to the Government after it approved plans for an offshore windfarm near the complex.

Mr Trump tweeted yesterday the outcome was a "great decision". He said: "I am convinced that if @AlexSalmond had not pushed ugly wind turbines all over Scotland, the vote would have been much better for him!"
