Crying out for result

DAVID Cameron was unfazed when a baby started crying noisily just as he stood up to address a Conservative Friends of the Union rally in Perth. The infant's yells threatened to drown out the Prime Minister's passionate plea for Scots to "shout from the rooftops" their support for a No vote. But without breaking his stride - and to rousing applause - he declared: "It matters for that child's future that we stay together as the United Kingdom!"

Face in the crowd

PENNY for George Osborne's thoughts after Alex Salmond was booed when his picture appeared on a giant screen as HMS Queen Elizabeth was named at Rosyth. People might remember that the Chancellor was booed in public at the 2012 Olympics in the midst of the Great Recession.

Rivals join forces

THE rivalry between Dundee and Dundee United fans has been put on hold - at least by rival supporters backing a Yes vote in the referendum. A couple of months ago the two camps joined forces and bought £2,000 of billboard space outside Dens and Tannadice to display a poster with the slogan "Two teams, one city, one goal" in the run-up to the referendum. Bravely, they did so before they had any money but Unspun hears the group has nearly reached its target thanks to a crowd-funding website.

Whatever he says

ALSO starring in Unspun's world of sport this week is Kelson Duffy, a semi-professional mixed martial arts fighter from Kircaldy who tells us he will be sponsored by Yes Scotland when he fights at a tournament at the Beach Ballroom in Aberdeen next week. Kelson, 19, who is studying nursing at Abertay University, says he is the first MMA fighter in Scotland to attract such sponsorship. We are not going to argue.

Double the effort

SCOTTISH Labour welcomed a YouGov poll suggesting the party is on course to win the 2016 Holyrood election. A far more interesting statistic, however, was the number of times Scottish Labour deputy leader Anas Sarwar said he was looking forward to seeing "Johann Lamont as Scotland's First Minister." In the briefest of press releases he hailed his party leader twice. Might he be trying to heal rifts?
