Voters in Orkney were given an all-female choice of candidates in a local by-election won by the Orkney Manifesto Group.

Orkney Islands Council said it was the first case of a women-only list on a ballot paper in the islands and possibly in Scotland.

The by-election in West Mainland ward followed the death of an Orkney Manifesto Group councillor.

Rachael King held the seat for the Group with more than 51% of the first-preference votes. Voting was: Orkney Manifesto Group 593, Independent 446 and Green 115. Turnout was 34%.

The council is controlled by independents.
