The SNP is celebrating after winning almost 50% of the votes in a by-election in Dundee.

Lynne Short beat seven other candidates to win the Maryfield by-election with 49.5% of the vote.

The by-election was triggered by the resignation of councillor Craig Melville.

Ms Short has thanked her family, the SNP and voters for their support.

Nicola Sturgeon congratulated the SNP's newest councillor on Twitter.

The First Minister tweeted: "Massive congratulations to Lynne Short - new SNP councillor for Maryfield ward. Great result!"

Polls predicted that the SNP are on course for a landslide victory in the  Holyrood election, which takes place on May 5.
