The Government has asked a regulator to consider outlawing television adverts for pay-day loans screened before the watershed.

The Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice (BCAP) is already looking at the rules on the content of pay-day adverts, but will now be asked to look at when they are allowed on television.

Baroness Jolly made the announcement after peers pushed for new laws banning the adverts before 9pm.

Peers argued that "pester power" from children putting pressure on parents to take out high-cost loans led families into debt.

Lady Jolly said the Government was determined to tackle the problem.

She said: "Treasury ministers have asked BCAP to broaden the remit of its review to ensure that it considers the appropriateness of scheduling rules as well as content."
