Labour's Scottish infighting has spilled out in social media as peers traded late-night tweets.

Former Holyrood colleagues George Foulkes and Jack McConnell clashed online early this morning as their party celebrated its annual fund-raising gala.

Lord Foulkes opened the exchange by questioning why Lord McConnell - and two other former frontbenchers - were not at the event.

"Really sorry Lord McConnell Henry McLeish & Andy Kerr unable to make Labour Fundraiser tonight but sure the three Amigos will rally to the flag," he tweeted.

"Totally unnecessary George," responded Lord McConnell. "Disappointing in fact."

Lord Foulkes replied: "Disappointing indeed."

The men served in the Scottish Parliament together. Former First Minister Jack McConnell has publicly supported Johann Lamont after she stood down from her post as the party's Scottish leader last week.

Lord Foulkes has defended the party's UK leadership against claims it treated its Scottish wing as a "branch office".

He was pictured at the gala dinner, which was also attended by Jim Murphy, the frontrunner to replace Ms Lamont.

Lord McConnell has also been subjected to late-night Twitter criticism from one of Scottish Labour's most senior members, Stephen McCabe, the leader of Inverclyde Council.

Mr McCabe has only recently resumed public tweeting after a late-night spat with a constituency ended in a row outside church.

He tweeted: "You are really pissing me off, Lord McConnell. Last week you were sticking the knife in to Johann..."
