Newly elected SNP deputy leader Stewart Hosie has called on party activists keep up the campaigning zeal which saw them through the referendum in the run up to the General Election.

The Dundee East and SNP Treasury spokesman at Westminster warned yesterday the poll to be held on May 7 would not be a re-run of the independence campaign.

Mr Hosie said the party needed to step up if they are to win the chance to "hold Westminster's feet to the fire to make sure they fulfil the promise, the pledge, the vow" to give a new Home Rule deal.

Speaking after he had beaten Holyrood Transport Minister Keith Brown and Youth and Women's Employment Minister Angela Constance to become Nicola Sturgeon's No 2 yesterday, Mr Hosie reiterated that the three main Westminster leaders should be held to account for their pre-referendum promises.

He said: "Remember what it was they told the Scottish people, many of whom voted No to get more powers. The closest thing to a federal state within one to two years.

"Let's make sure they deliver that promise by delivering the largest number, a record number, of SNP MPs next year. That's the raw power Westminster understands, that's what Scotland needs to deliver next year so this party is the guarantor of the powers Scotland needs."

Ms Sturgeon congratulated Mr Hosie, saying he would be an "outstanding" deputy leader for the p arty: "I look forward immensely with you at my side to leading this party to even bigger and better times ahead."

A total of 34,934 votes were cast in the deputy leadership election.

Mr Hosie is married to Sports Minister Shona Robison and was the SNP's first youth convener and spent four years as the party's national secretary before being elected convener in 2003. He took Dundee East from Labour in 2005.
