Almost 30 candidates are to contest four crucial by-elections in Glasgow next month.

Polling day on August 6 will see voters have the choice of 27 contenders in the wards of Craigton, Langside, Calton and Anderson-City.

At least six candidates will contest the by-elections in each ward after nominations closed. Ukip being represented in each of the multi-member wards, along with the Scottish Greens.

They were triggered by the election of two SNP councillors as MPs and the resignation of a Green Party councillor.

The SNP's Alison Thewliss, who represented Calton, was elected as MP for Glasgow Central and Martin Docherty as MP for West Dunbartonshire on May 7.

Mr Docherty's departure forced a poll in council leader Gordon Matheson's Anderston/City ward.

Scottish Greens councillor Liam Hainey, who was elected in 2012 to represent Langside, is standing down due to ill health.
