Alex Salmond will clash with opposition leaders at Holyrood for the final time today at First Minister's Questions.

Mr Salmond, who has held the top job in Scottish politics for more than seven years, will step down as leader of the SNP tomorrow.

He will leave Bute House in Edinburgh, the official residence of the First Minister, next week when his successor Nicola Sturgeon is formally confirmed in the post.

Mr Salmond, who is Scotland's longest serving First Minister, announced he would be stepping down within hours of losing the independence referendum in September.

Yesterday he told how he had enjoyed the weekly clashes with rival politicians, saying: "'I love First Minister's Questions, I love the Scottish Parliament."

Mr Salmond is yet to decide if he will stand in the 2015 Westminster election or the 2016 Holyrood election.

When asked if he would stand in the next Scottish Parliament election, he said: ''I'm going to make an announcement in due course when I make up my mind, but what I can say is that I will continue to serve the people of the north-east of Scotland as long as they wish to elect me.''
