Scottish LibDem leader Willie Rennie yesterday abandoned his schedule to campaign in his party's sole Borders seat after a poll predicted if would fall to the Tories.

Rennie pitched up in Galashiels alongside candidate Michael Moore, the former Scottish Secretary, who is defending a majority of 5675 in Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk.

On Friday, the latest constituency poll from Tory peer Lord Ashcroft put the Conservatives one point ahead of the LibDems in the seat.

Rennie said: "Michael Moore is one of Scotland's towering and unifying political figures. It is essential that we keep him for the good of Scottish and UK politics. Michael Moore is too good to lose."
