ALL three planned Glasgow City Council by-elections will be held on August 6, according to official papers.

They were triggered by the election of two SNP councillors as MPs and the resignation of a Green Party councillor.

The SNP's Alison Thewliss was elected as MP for Glasgow Central and Martin Docherty as MP for West Dunbartonshire on May 7.

Docherty's departure will force a by-election in council leader Gordon Matheson's Anderston/City ward. Thewliss' seat in Calton is also up for grabs.

Scottish Greens councillor Liam Hainey, who was elected in 2012 to represent Langside, is standing down due to ill health.

Voters in all three multi-member wards will go to polls on Thursday, August 6.

Candidates must be officially nominated by their parties before July 7, according to official papers released by the returning officer.

The outcome of the ballot will not affect Labour's majority, however, when the councillors stood down to force the by-elections, one Labour source said the decision was an attempt to "cut the legs of the party in Glasgow".

An SNP source said: "If we win both, any problems bubbling beneath the surface in the council's Labour group will be thrust to the fore. They've more to lose than we do."

Glasgow's SNP group leader, Councillor Susan Aitken, said: "The SNP in Glasgow take absolutely nothing for granted and we will campaign very hard in any by-elections when they are called."

A spokesman for Glasgow Labour said: "We aim to win these opposition seats. If we do, our overall majority will increase."
