THE case for Scotland remaining in the UK must be made "more vigorously than ever," Ruth Davidson will argue in a speech tonight.

The Scots Tory leader will tell an audience in London the voice of Scotland's two million No voters needs to be heard more clearly.

Ms Davidson is due to deliver a lecture titled Scotland's future in the UK: Building a better Union for all.

A source close to the MSP said the SNP had "grabbed the headlines" since its election victory in Scotland and those who supported Scotland's place in the UK needed to do continue making the case.

The source said: "Labour is going to spend the summer talking to itself.

"We want to spend the next few months speaking up for the quiet majority in Scotland who want to see a better Union which works for them and their families.

"Ruth will be making it clear in the lecture that all of us who care for the union need to do a lot more to make sure we secure its future.

"We can't fall into the trap of thinking it'll all turn out ok on its own. It won't."

Ms Davidson will use the speech to argue for a stronger Scottish Parliament but also a greater focus on reasons to stay in the UK.

Interviewed on Sky News yesterday, she said her party would "surprise" people at next year's Holyrood elections.

She promised to offer a "comprehensive manifesto" and insisted the SNP would not be given an "easy ride" on their record in government.

She also brushed aside questions of whether she ambitions to lead the Tories at UK level.

She said: "I think that we're going to surprise a few people in May of next year.

"We're putting together a comprehensive manifesto that talks to people of this country about the responsibilities that this Parliament is about to have - how we can use that, how we can stand up for people, get a good deal from their taxes, increase choice within education.

"The SNP have had an easy ride on their record. Not any longer."
