DAVID Cameron dashed back from a Lord Mayor's banquet to vote in the Commons last night, as the Government won a dramatic and controversial vote on its bid to sign up afresh to European justice measures.

The Prime Minister was forced to return early after a vote on the Government signing up to 35 pieces of European legislation was brought forward.

But the Government was accused of breaking a vow over the European Arrest Warrant (EAW).

Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper earlier utilised a rarely used procedural device to postpone the decision, amid accusations the Government was breaking a promise to hold an individual vote on the EAW.

Ms Cooper's move to force the debate to be halted and brought back another day was backed by 25 Tory MPs.

The debate ended early when Labour lost its bid to postpone the decision, and the vote went ahead amid chaotic scenes in the chamber. Earlier, Speaker John Bercow blasted the Government for trying to slip out of the EAW vote in a move he said would leave the public "contemptuous" of ministers.
