NEARLY six out of 10 voters feel the Liberal Democrats have become irrelevant, according to a new poll.

As Nick Clegg prepares to deliver his speech to the party's conference in Glasgow tomorrow, the snapshot by Comres also shows 63 per cent of people say they cannot trust him to keep his promises.

Some 44 per cent of people think it was a mistake for the LibDems to go into Coalition with the Conservatives, while 42 per cent say they feel betrayed by the Deputy Prime Minister. Mr Clegg, whose party is now polling just seven per cent, level with the Greens, has told activists they face the "fight of our lives" at the May General Election.

One party insider said the leadership believes "the public will punish us at the election."

Meanwhile, an ICM survey last night gave Mr Clegg his most negative poll rating to date; minus 42 points. Ed Miliband was on minus 35 and David Cameron on minus seven.
