A full description of the varied musical adventures of Joan Wasser, aka Joan As Police Woman, right, would barely fit into the entirety of The Herald, never mind this column.

However, one justifiable argument can be made quickly: the Connecticut-born chanteuse is making the best music of her career in her current guise, which is saying something considering her past collaborations and performances with Antony and the Johnsons, Nick Cave and Rufus Wainwright. Both her albums, Real Life and To Survive, are exceptionally strong collections of beguiling, soulful chamber-pop, with a hint of punky sass running underneath, topped off by her sensual, striking vocal. Wasser is a multi-talented musician too, having previously been lead violinist in various school and community orchestras, in addition to spells in a host of alt-rock acts. A formidable talent indeed.
